What are Nitrofurantoin Capsules?

Nitrofurantoin capsules contain an active ingredient called Nitrofurantoin. It is an antibiotic that specifically treats bacterial infections in the urinary tract (like acute cystitis).

Women are more prone to acute, uncomplicated UTIs. Nitrofurantoin is a prescription medication used to treat non-severe urinary tract infections. It works by attacking the bacteria that cause infection in the bladder, urethra, or kidneys, which causes a burning sensation while urinating, discomfort in the bladder, or sometimes pain in the kidneys.

Nitrofurantoin is a narrow-spectrum antibiotic that shows its action in the urinary system. This property makes it effective where it’s needed the most, therefore, it does not disturb the entire biome.

How Nitrofurantoin Capsules Work

Nitrofurantoin is used to treat common UTIs, sometimes bladder or water infections.  It kills the bacteria responsible for the infection, which in turn reduces inflammation, eases pain, and discomfort. Because the body filters it from the blood into the urine, as a result, it achieves high concentrations in the bladder.  This helps in the rapid relief of symptoms and clears the infection thoroughly.

Common symptoms of UTIs include:

  • Burning sensation or pain during urination
  • Frequent urges to urinate
  • and lower abdominal discomfort
  • Blood in urine
  • Cloudy urine

How to Take Nitrofurantoin Capsules

Nitrofurantoin is an oral capsule that is usually taken twice daily, for three days. It is recommended that you take it with food, which helps increase absorption and reduce the risk of stomach upset. It is important to read the patient information given on the medication leaflet properly before taking the medication.
