Start Consultation Here

Oral thrush is a relatively easy to treat infection, caused by a fungus called candida. The symptoms of oral thrush include, white patches that appear on the tongue, on the roof of the mouth, the inner cheeks or the gums. It can cause redness, discomfort and increased sensitivity in the mouth especially when having hot and cold foods. It can affect anyone from babies to the elderly both males and females. Oral thrush can often occur after a course of antibiotics, due to a weakened immune system or in people who wear dentures. It can also occur as a result of residue from steroid inhalers remaining in the mouth. It is important to start treatment early to prevent the infection from spreading.

The usual treatment for oral thrush is oral antifungal medication which is applied to the affected area. The two most common oral antifungals are called Daktarin oral gel and Nystatin oral suspension. Both of these treatments are applied and left on the area for a short while to help fight the infection at source. Daktarin oral gel has been unavailable in the UK for quite some time however we have Nystatin available which is just as effective. An addition to the medication you can help speed up recovery and prevent future recurrence by drinking plenty of water, maintaining good oral hygiene, and rinsing your mouth after using steroid inhalers.

Oral Thrush – Nystatin oral suspension
Nystatin suspension is used to treat fungal infections in the mouth, such as oral thrush. It works by killing the yeast responsible for the infection. The liquid is taken several times a day, usually after meals. It should be swished around the mouth for as long as possible before swallowing, so it can fully coat the affected areas. Treatment typically continues for a few days after symptoms have cleared to ensure the infection is fully resolved.

Nystatin oral suspension is poorly absorbed from the gut and is therefore generally very well tolerated with few systemic side effects. The most commonly reported local effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach discomfort, though these tend to be mild. Some patients may experience an unpleasant taste or oral irritation. Allergic reactions are rare but possible. Because nystatin acts locally within the mouth and gastrointestinal tract, the risk of widespread side effects is minimal.
