What are Metronidazole Tablets?

Metronidazole Tablets contain the active ingredient Metronidazole. It is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medicine that is specially used to treat anaerobic bacterial infections.

Mechanism Of Action

Metronidazole works by directly killing the excess bacteria present in the vagina. It acts on the bacterial cell, disrupting its DNA and inhibiting its growth, which causes the infection, bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis is usually caused when there is a change in natural balance of bacteria present in the vagina. Metronidazole tablets help to balance the natural cycle of bacteria, thus reducing the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis.

Who can use Metronidazole tablets?

Metronidazole Tablets can be used by women who:

  • Have the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis, such as a fishy smell or a thin discharge.
  • Have a positive home test for bacterial vaginosis
  • Had bacterial vaginosis diagnosed by their doctor

Dosage

We recommend that you always follow your doctor’s advice before taking any medicine. But here are some guidelines on how to take Metronidazole tablets to treat bacterial vaginosis.

  • The recommended dosage of Metronidazole tablets is 1 tablet twice daily, taken for 7 days.
  • Metronidazole tablets should be taken with or after food.
  • It is recommended to complete the course even if your symptoms have improved to prevent the infection from coming back.
  • Avoid using alcohol with Metronidazole tablets as alcohol reacts with the medicine, causing nausea and vomiting.
