Description

It is used to treat many dental problems, like swollen gums, infected mouth ulcers, or tooth abscesses. This medicine provides an effective treatment for many oral and dental problems, particularly those that are caused by certain bacteria.

What is Metronidazole

Metronidazole tablets contain the active ingredient Metronidazole. It is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medicine that is specially used to treat anaerobic bacterial infections. Anaerobic bacteria are those that do not need oxygen to survive and are generally found in dental infections. It is also used to reduce the swelling and pain of the gums.

Types of Dental infection treated with Metronidazole?

Metronidazole is specially used in many dental infections, some of which are listed here:

  • Dental Abscess – a bacterial infection inside the tooth that causes pain, swelling, or pus in the tooth.
  • Periodontitis – a bacterial infection causes serious gum disease, including pain and swelling.
  • Post-Dental Procedure Infection – This type of infection is caused after dental work, which may include root canal treatments or dental extractions
  • Infected Wisdom Teeth – It is also used if you have an infected wisdom tooth.

How Does Metronidazole Work?

Metronidazole is an antibiotic that kills and stops the growth of the bacteria that are responsible for certain types of infections. It targets the DNA of the bacteria, which disturbs its ability to repair or reproduce itself. As a result, these bacteria die off, making your body recover faster. It is especially used to treat infections deeply where mouth washes and other surface treatments cannot reach.

Who can use Metronidazole Tablets?

Metronidazole can be used by:

  • Adults or children above the age of 12.
  • People who have confirmed bacterial infection.
  • People who are advised to use these tablets by their dentists.

Dosage

The usual dosage of the Metronidazole tablet for dental infection is:

  • 200mg to 400 mg (depending on the severity of the infection), three times a day
  • This medicine is usually prescribed for 3-7 days

It is necessary to complete the full course even if you start to feel better, otherwise the infection may come again, and your body can create antibiotic resistance.

Always take the medicine with water, preferably after a meal, and take it at regular intervals.

Avoid using alcohol while taking the medicine
