Thrush is a very common infection caused by a yeast like fungus called candida. It can result from an imbalance of hormones or bacteria in the body, often after a course of antibiotics. It is most common in young women, although it can affect older women as well as men. In women it usually results in itching and swelling of the vagina and the surrounding area as well as a white discharge. Similarly in men, the penis can become infected resulting in itchiness and a white discharge. It is usually easy to treat and there are a variety of options when it comes to treating thrush.
The most popular method of treating thrush is using Canestan or clotrimazole cream. This cream is applied directly onto the affected area. However, there are other alternatives, each with their own benefits. There is an oral capsule available called Fluconazole which, only needs to be taken once. This can be quite convenient as it is a single dose. Other options such as internal creams and pessaries, can be used by women, which can be more beneficial as they tackle the symptoms directly at source. If you are unsure of which treatment is right for you, or your previous treatment hasn’t worked for you, fill in the short questionnaire and let us help you decide.
