For some women, the period, or “time of the month’ as it is often known is a time of great anxiety as they can experience severe pain and discomfort. The pain, also known as dysmenorrhea, is usually described as cramping felt in the lower abdomen, but the pain can also spread to the thighs and back. Non-medicated options such as hot water bottles, and exercises may provide some relief, however for severe or regular pain, you may require medication to help keep on top of the discomfort.

Other than hot water bottles, most women usually take Paracetamol or Ibuprofen tablets to help relieve them of period pain. This helps in the majority of cases as it is an anti-inflammatory medication which tackles the root of the problem. Although for some women, this does not completely eliminate the pain. Prescription strength anti-inflammatory medication such as Mefenamic acid is good at treating severe pain associated with dysmenorrhea.
