Sometimes women may wish to delay their periods. This is can be due to practical or personal reasons such as for weddings, holidays, athletic competitions, or even religious observances that require abstention from certain activities during menstruation.
For women who experience severe menstrual symptoms such as heavy bleeding, severely painful cramps, migraines, or conditions like endometriosis, delaying a period can provide some much needed temporary relief, especially during important events. Some women who have irregular cycles may seek more predictability and control over when their period occurs.
Dr Weightman can provide Norethisterone, which is a synthetic progesterone commonly prescribed for this purpose. It works by maintaining the uterine lining that would otherwise be shed during menstruation. When taken 3-4 days before an expected period and continued until the end of the time when the delay is required, norethisterone prevents the lining from breaking down, hence delaying the period.
When treatment is stopped, the progesterone levels drop, triggering the menstrual bleeding within 2-3 days usually. Norethisterone is usually prescribed for short-term use (typically up to 14 days) and requires a prescription which Dr Weightman takes care of.
Norethisterone is generally considered safe for short-term use for most women. However, it should be avoided by pregnant women, women trying to conceive and those who are breastfeeding. Women suffering from liver disease and those who have a family history of blood clots may also be advised to avoid Norethisterone. Dr Weightman will be happy to assist with this.
