Jet lag is when our internal body clock becomes desynchronised from local time due to very quick travel across multiple time zones. This temporary sleep disorder disrupts our circadian rhythms which are the natural cycles that tell us when we feel alert or sleepy. Our bodies typically adjust to new time zones at a rate of about one day per hour of time difference, leaving travellers temporarily caught between two worlds.
Many travellers experience jet lag’s characteristic constellation of symptoms, which may include daytime fatigue, difficulty concentrating, mood changes, and disrupted sleep patterns. Physical symptoms of jet lag can include headaches, mild stomach discomfort, and a general feeling of tiredness. The severity of jet lag often depends upon the number of time zones that have been crossed and direction of travel, with journeys East usually causing more greater effects than Westward ones.
The consequences of jet lag extend beyond mere discomfort. Business travellers may find their decision-making abilities compromised during important meetings. Athletes competing internationally might experience decreased performance. Even holiday travellers can lose precious days adjusting to new time zones. For shift workers or frequent flyers, chronic disruption of circadian rhythms may potentially contribute to long-term health issues including metabolic disturbances and immune system challenges.
Treatment
Fortunately, we at Dr Weightmans can supply short-term use Melatonin supplements which may prove beneficial. In normal life, Melatonin is a hormone that is produced in the brain at night and helps with the circadian rhythm, helping a person go to sleep. Daylight stops the body from producing Melatonin. Taking Melatonin supplements helps travellers go to sleep when they wouldn’t normally rest by making their brains think it is time to rest. For this treatment to work it is important that patients ensure that they take the medication at the correct time.
