Insomnia is a common condition which affects your ability to get a good night’s sleep. This can be due to not being able to fall asleep for a long time after getting into bed, waking up shortly after falling asleep, or just not feeling refreshed when waking up. Getting enough sleep is vital for the body to be able to rest and repair itself. Failure to do so can lead to poor concentration, lack of focus and a build-up of fatigue. Long term insomnia can also lead to more serious problems such as diabetes, heart disease and a decline in mental health.
If you are experiencing difficulty in getting a good night’s sleep, there are some lifestyle changes you can try to make to help you get back to a normal sleeping routine. These include reducing caffeine intake, limiting screen time before bed, and ensuring the room is dark enough.
However sometimes these measures may not be enough and medication can help you get back into your normal sleeping pattern. Sleeping tablets such as the new drug, Quviviq can help block chemicals in the brain that force you to stay awake, allowing you to fall asleep quicker. Alternatively you may be prescribed melatonin, which mimics a naturally occurring hormone in your body to help you get back into a healthy sleeping rhythm.
