HIV

Although still a significant global health issue, major progress in prevention strategies has transformed HIV from being a fatal diagnosis to a manageable chronic condition. Modern prevention strategies combine behavioral approaches with powerful biomedical interventions that can dramatically reduce transmission rates.

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis or PrEP for sort, is one of the most significant breakthroughs in modern HIV prevention. When PrEP treatments are taken consistently, they can reduce the risk of acquiring HIV through sexual contact by about 99%. PrEP is recommended for individuals who are at substantial risk, including those with HIV-positive partners, multiple sexual partners, or inconsistent condom use. These medicines works by preventing the virus from establishing a permanent infection.

Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) serves as an emergency intervention when potential exposure has already occurred. This treatment must be started within 72 hours of potential exposure and continued for 28 days to effectively prevent infection.

For HIV-positive individuals, antiretroviral therapy (ART) not only manages their condition but also prevents transmission. When treatment suppresses viral load to undetectable levels, the risk of sexual transmission becomes effectively zero—a concept known as “Undetectable = Untransmittable” (U=U).

Regular testing and education form the foundation of prevention efforts. Early detection allows for prompt treatment initiation, while education reduces stigma and promotes preventive behaviors.
