Heavy Periods (Menorrhagia)

Abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding, medically known as menorrhagia, is symptomised by prolonged, excessive bleeding that interferes with daily activities. It is often recognised when a woman needs to change menstrual products frequently, experiences flooding that soaks through protection, passes large clots, or bleeds for more than seven days.

Women who suffer from hormonal imbalance, uterine fibroids, polyps, adenomyosis, endometriosis and bleeding disorders can suffer from menorrhagia. Certain medicines, and underlying medical conditions like thyroid disorders or PCOS also increases the risk of heavy bleeding. Perimenopause, which is the transition to menopause, often causes unpredictable and sometimes heavier than normal periods.

Secondary symptoms of menorrhagia include frequently experiencing fatigue from iron-deficiency anaemia, sleep disruption, anxiety about public bleeding episodes, and limitations on work, exercise, and social activities.

There are varying treatment options from conservative medicines to surgical approaches. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen not only manage pain but can reduce bleeding by 20-40%. Dr Weightmans can supply hormonal treatments, like contraceptives, which can effectively regulate cycles and reduce blood flow. Tranexamic acid can also be supplied which when taken during menstruation, reduces bleeding by inhibiting fibrinolysis.

Iron supplements help prevent or treat anaemia associated with heavy bleeding, hence improving energy levels and the quality of life while the medical interventions address the underlying cause.
