Gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) . It is spread through vaginal, anal, or oral sex and can infect the genitals, rectum, throat, and eyes. Many infected individuals show no symptoms, making its transmission very easy.
Symptoms differ between men and women and also the method of infection:
Genital Gonorrhea in men causes painful urination, white/yellow/green discharge from the penis, and testicular pain or swelling. Women may get increased vaginal discharge, painful urination, bleeding between periods, and pelvic pain. Many women remain without symptoms. Other areas of Infection include rectal where symptoms are itching, discharge, bleeding, or painful bowel movements. In the throat, sufferers get soreness (often mild or unnoticed) and symptoms in the eyes include pain, redness, and also a discharge. This is more common in newborns who are exposed during birth.
Testing is important since gonorrhea often lacks symptoms. Our home test kits are simple and easy to use with a follow up with a healthcare professional positive results.
Gonorrhea is curable with oral antibiotics. Also sexual partners from the past 60 days should also be tested and treated to prevent reinfection.
Methods of prevention include, using condoms, getting regular screenings – especially high-risk groups such as gay men and sexually active young females and avoiding sex for at least 7 days after treatment has ended to prevent transmission.
Early detection and treatment are key to avoid complications like infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and increased HIV risk. If you suspect exposure, seek testing promptly.
