Fungal nail infections are caused by a fungus which is also responsible for athlete’s foot. It is not a painful condition; however it can disfigure the nail making it thickened, and discoloured. It is most common in toenails and starts with one or part of one nail before spreading to others. The fungus affects the feet more as it thrives in damp and warm conditions which is often the case when shoes have been worn for a long time. Although fungal nail infections can be treated it can often be a painstaking process once it has spread, therefore it is important to begin treatment as quickly as possible.
The 2 types of treatment available for fungal nail infections are paints/lacquers and oral anti-fungal medication. Lacquers such as amorolfine are applied directly onto the nail stopping the spread of the infection and allowing it to heal. The benefit of using this is that it is only applied once a week, and there are little to no potential side effects. However for best results you may need to continue using it for a long time. For more persistent fungal nail infections you may be prescribed oral medication such as terbinafine tablets.
These are to be taken for shorter periods of time and can clear up the infections within a few weeks. As the oral medication is quite strong you may be asked to monitor your liver function levels, the test for which can be bought on our testing (link to page) page.
