Eczema

Atopic Dermatitis, or eczema as it is more commonly known, is a skin condition suffered by millions of people in the UK. Although it is more commonly found in children, some of whom become symptom free as they grow older, it can affect people of all ages. Eczema causes the skin to become dry, itchy, irritated and inflamed; often when exposed to allergens or specific triggers. Triggers can include pets hairs, particular soaps/detergents or even sunlight. Sufferers of eczema may not be symptomatic most of the time until they have a flare-up. The aim of treatment is to minimise the number of flare-ups and treat them when they appear.

The treatment for eczema consists generally of 2 types of medication. Emollients, which keep the skin moisturised and less prone to cracking and bleeding. Steroid creams are usually prescribed in the event of a flare-up. These help to reduce or stop the body’s reaction to the trigger or allergen causing the flare-up. If the flare-up isn’t managed it can cause the skin to become inflamed and an urge to itch, which when scratched can cause the skin to bleed, and sometimes even become infected.

If you require prescription strength steroids when faced with a flare up, our prescriber may be able to supply you with one after a short consultation.
