A thickened, discoloured or crumbly toenail is usually a fungal infection, and it won’t clear on its own. Treatments such as amorolfine nail lacquer attack the fungus in the nail itself. Patience is essential: nails grow slowly, so visible improvement takes months and the treated nail must grow out fully. Start early – small infections are far easier to clear than long-established ones – and treat any athlete’s foot at the same time.
