What is Wegovy?

How it works

Wegovy contains Semaglutide as its active component. This active compound helps minimize a natural hormone in the body called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). GLP-1 is responsible for regulating appetite and food intake. Semaglutide is responsible for activating GLP-1 receptors, which signal the brain to control hunger and support weight loss.

Semaglutide works through several key actions:

• Appetite Regulation: Semaglutide acts on brain areas that control hunger. This, in turn, leads to reduced appetite and calorie intake.

 Who can use Wegovy?

Wegovy is suitable for adults who want to manage their weight, including weight loss and weight maintenance, with a low-calorie diet and regular exercise. It is suitable if

• Adults with a Body Mass Index (BMI), of 30 (obesity) or higher.
• Adults with a BMI, of 27 or higher (overweight) and at least one weight-related health problem, like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, as well as high cholesterol.

Dosage and Administration of Wegovy

Starting Dose

• In the Initial stage of using Wegovy (semaglutide), you will start with a 0.25 mg dose injected subcutaneously(under the skin), once a week for the first 4 weeks.
• This lower dose of Wegovy (semaglutide) helps your body adjust to the medication regardless of previous weight-loss injection experience.

Dose Escalation

• After taking Wegovy (semaglutide) for the initial dosage of 4 weeks, your dose will be increased to 0.5mg, 1mg, and 1.7mg. After this, you will get the final and maximum strength of 2.4mg once weekly.
• You should take each increasing dose for 4 weeks before escalating the dose of Wegovy, so the body can adjust to the increasing dose of medicine.
• Or you can gradually increase the dose only as instructed by the doctor or the prescribing pharmacist to manage any side effects you may experience.

Administration Method

• Wegovy comes in a very easy-to-use and self-administered subcutaneous (under the skin) form.
• You can easily inject an injection into common sites that include the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, particularly those that have more fat.
• It is recommended to use Wegovy injections at the same time and day of each week, with or without a whole meal.
• It is important to follow the detailed guidelines on the leaflet that comes with your medication.
